A bit of history on Women and Pool/Billiards: In the 1920s, the poolroom was an environment in which men gathered to loiter, smoke, fight, bet, and play. The rooms of today bear no resemblance to those of the earlier times. Until very recently, billiards was completely dominated by men. The atmosphere of the poolroom was very forbidding, and women had trouble being accepted there. Nonetheless, women have been enthusiastic players since the game was brought up from the ground in the 15th century. For over two hundred years, women of fashion have played the game. In the past, it was very difficult for a woman to develop billiard skills because male players, her family, and friends usually did not support her efforts and it was not easy to find experienced female instructors or coaches. As these situations changed, and continue to change to this day, we can expect women to equal or even exceed men in ability and have taken the game to new heights.
Times have certainly changed, and today, there are pool halls all over Canada and the world that are smoke-free, classy, and professional, places where all genders can feel comfortable playing, learning, and competing. The times are changing for the better, and the new generation of women pool players will be stronger than the last.
After many players/people approached me over time with the idea of holding a Women's Gunn Show Event, I gave a lot of thought to formats, numbers, prizes, etc., and the end result and decision was that everyone loves the format, and how the current Gunn Show's run, so everything will be kept the same for Women's Tournaments.
There are prizes supplied and awarded by me to thank all of the amazing people and players who support my events, this is just a small token of my appreciation. On top of the $100.00 prize added to the pot by Jen R. (Dooly's Portland St. Manager) and myself, there are two 50/50 draws held at each tournament, and half of the proceeds are divided between the Dooly's Portland St. Breakfast Program and The Canadian Cancer Society "on behalf of The "Annual" Mille Gunn Memorial Pool Tournament."
The female players I see/play against today (some are friends) are extremely competitive on the tables and will give any player "Male or Female" a challenge; many of the women compete all over Canada (and Vegas) in professional events, and do very well. I am proud to have hosted the first WOMEN'S GUNN SHOW EVENT on Saturday, April 06, 2024 at Dooly's Rockingham, the event was a success with thirty players coming out to battle it out on the tables, amazing day and more to come. Due to the large response/interest from the first Women's Gunn Show Event, my team and I agreed a larger venue (Dooly's Portland St.) with more tables is required, and I have increased the player cap to 40 for all future events. A "Second Chance" (single knockout) event has also been added with a $10.00 buy in for those players who are knocked out of the tournament early, and want to continue playing. Second chance play will begin around mid afternoon the day of the event (races/times to be determined by the directors). All of my event's are professionally covered by Brian's Cuesport Streams.
Thank you, and hope to see you at future events.
